Sustainable Dunblane
Sustainable Dunblane is a new, community-led environmental action group. The long-term aim of this initiative is to end Dunblane's dependence on fossil fuels.
We all depend on oil for transportation, heating, power generation, food production, plastics and much more. Ever increasing volumes of this extremely versatile resource have fuelled the growth of the world’s economies, but “peak oil” recognises that global production will very soon reach its maximum and then fall into terminal decline. Despite increased spending in the search for new oil reserves, there is little of any significance being found to meet surging global demand.
We are approaching the end of cheap and abundant oil, and reliance on fossil fuels leaves us all vulnerable. It is therefore necessary to "think globally and act locally".
Transition Towns initiative
A growing number of villages, towns and cities – following the examples of Kinsale in Co. Cork and Totnes in Devon - are working to become "Transition Towns". This involves "relocalising" everything a community needs to sustain itself and thrive. With good local food networks and the development of strong practical skills, communities can build resilience to declining fuel supplies and at the same time reduce their carbon footprint. By adapting the Transition Town model to our local requirements, Sustainable Dunblane aims to plan the transition towards lower energy consumption, and develop a stronger, vibrant, more sustainable community.
Working together
Like other such initiatives throughout the UK and across the world, our aim is to raise awareness of the problems, and then to work with our community and local groups to build the solutions. Our initial meetings have highlighted transport, energy saving, food production, waste reduction, renewables and micro-generation as areas we could work on. We need people of all ages to be part of those solutions. Experience and qualifications aren't essential, just enthusiasm and an interest in the environment and our local community.
It's not all doom and gloom!
We want this project to be inclusive, imaginative, practical, and fun. We can all be part of a Sustainable Dunblane, and we would encourage everyone to help provide a strong local response to global environmental challenges.
